DISHER FAMILY OF VIRGINIA, KENTUCKY AND INDIANA

The ancestor of this family was Christopher Disher, who,
according to his gravestone in Sulphur Spring cemetery, Nilwood township,
Macoupin County, Illinois, died on 1 May 1836, aged 75. Accordingly, he
was presumably born about 1760 or 1761, of a German family. He is first of
record on 11 April 1787 in Frederick County, Virginia, when, as Christopher "Doush,"
he married Elizabeth Helm. By 1792, Christopher was in Mason County,
Kentucky, appearing in the Bracken County tax lists after that county was formed
from Mason in 1797. In 1808, Christopher married, second, Dolly Berry.
In 1829, he accompanied a married daughter to Illinois. Earlier, some of
his sons migrated to Indiana. Several children remained in Kentucky.
