JOHN COX

John Cox was a Revolutionary Soldier and may have been the man who was born about 1752 and enlisted on 20 February 1776 in Captain John Nelson's Independent Company of Riflemen, raised in western Pennsylvania to participate in the invasion of Canada.  This John Cox served through much of the war in the Pennsylvania Line.  In any event, our John Cox married Catherine Cull and was of Virginia on 1 November 1783, the birthdate of his oldest son, Joseph.  About ten years later (or perhaps sooner), he moved to Redstone Fort, now Brownsville, Pennsylvania.  Thereafter, he joined the migration to Kentucky, but it is difficult to distinguish him from others of that name in the Kentucky tax records.  He apparently lived in Bourbon, Fleming or Mason counties during the 1790s.  He was presumably the John Cox who appeared in Henry County, Kentucky in 1804, departing for what was later Wayne County (then Dearborn County), Indiana by 1807.

John Cox was a blacksmith and gunsmith--very useful and indispensible trades in a backwoods country like Kentucky, which abounded in game, and where the lurking Indian disputed every inch of territory invaded by the white man.  He also had a little patch of cleared land for a farm, on which he occasionally worked with his sons, six in number.

John Cox served as a Justice of the Peace and was a founder of Abington in Wayne County.  He is last of record on 29 April 1822, at which time he resided in Union County, just south of Abington.

John and Catherine (Cull) Cox had seven known children:
